The organic goods of Cyprus
In today’s world, where people are looking for more natural products, the “organic” label has become increasingly popular. Organic products can be found not only in Cyprus, but also among those who are planning to emigrate there or have already done this successfully.
Cyprus is a true organic paradise for people who want to shop with conscience. Not only are there the usual grocery stores, but also health food markets that offer everything from cleaning products and detergents to chocolate and sugar-free chocolate bars! If you need cosmetics or hair care products after a long vacation, there are also various offers on this island. There is not just a single brand, but several different varieties depending on your preference (or needs).
The term “organic” has grown in popularity in recent years, especially among those who are looking for natural products. There are plenty of choices on the market.
Where can you find organic stores?
There are organic shops all over the island! One of the stores is the Biopanda Organic Store in Larnaca. It has everything you need for a healthy lifestyle and many more options than other stores on an adventurous budget.
There are three organic shops in the city of Larnaca, one of which is a completely vegetarian organic shop near Biopanda.
1. Biopanda
2. Green Shop Larnaca
3. Gorganic (near Biopanda)
Etherio is a popular grocery store in Nicosia that has over 15 stores across the city. There is also a branch near Limassol that carries almost the same items but also offers special offers depending on what’s in season. It is therefore worth visiting several shops if you live nearby.
Organic without organic seal
The cost of the organic label in Cyprus can be a big burden for many farmers. We met an Englishman here on vacation who told us that there is “BIO” 1 km from his house. However, he cannot sell oranges this way because of the high organic seal prices. This is very unfortunate, because you would think that such strict guidelines, where chemicals are not allowed to come close to products, could make them more accessible across borders.
Where do the products come from?
Organic ice cream comes from all over Europe. Frog products are produced in Germany, and Demeter’s dairy-free treats are available in Cyprus. Italian vegan desserts were only discovered by Etherio this year, while other organic shops such as Lavera have had their own brands for years. They offer delicious sweets for vegans across the region who want nothing more than natural ingredients with no additives or preservatives that could harm your body.
The English are not only responsible for the many Cypriot foods and drinks, but have also helped to set up many businesses. These companies are part of our everyday lives. For example: Eat Real. A large part (and probably most) of the goods come from England, as many people have settled here over time. This is reflected in the product lines as offered by “Eat Real”. The company of “Eat Real” has existed since 1968.
How much do the products cost?
Cypriot Lidl has significantly expanded its organic range over the last 2 years at pretty good prices. As demand for environmentally friendly products has increased at some German supermarkets, scanner data collection can be used to determine the transported goods. You look at how much each product costs per unit of measure, rather than just looking at total revenue. This in turn leads to a more comprehensive picture when you look at all branches in a country, because certain items are no longer selected because there are no more.
If you want to save on the cost of your next vacation, there are a few things that will help you do that. Firstly, do not pay attention to whether the prices are similar in different shops, because sometimes they differ by up to 10%. The next time you shop for cosmetics and other travel essentials, you can buy them in bulk before buying them individually at home or abroad.
And what if you don’t have a health food store nearby?
That is no problem at all! Many stores, such as Holland & Barrett, to name just one example, have an entire department dedicated to organic products. But they can also be found on the shelves together with other conventional products. Even in Cypriot villages, there are small corners where only natural/ecological products are offered – for example in the Metro supermarket, where there is already plenty of choice.
Are there any significant differences in the products?
The organic market is a great place to find some unique, hard-to-find products. You may not know that there is Cypriot vegan cheese – when we looked for it in the local stores, none of them had any! Luckily, there are many more shops and family businesses elsewhere with better selection and higher quality.
Conclusion: Research is paramount!
Cyprus is a real organic oasis for people who want to shop with heart and mind. With a little research, you’ll find just about anything your heart desires.
